Blues 1-3 Oxford University (14-25, 15-25, 25-20, 19-25)
The Leys School, 08/02/2004
After much rearrangement and reorganisation this BUSA fixture was finally set to take place at the Leys School. Having missed two previously arranged dates the Oxford team were in danger of conceding a walkover and hence missing the BUSA finals, and as a sporting gesture the Cambridge team agreed on a third date for the match. Ready to play Oxford were; Fiona Danks (m, Capt), Uta Wieland (m), Sarah Payne (m), Daniella Maggiorano (m/o), Jill Aitken (o), Laura Diaz-Anadon (o), Cinzia Casiraghi (o), Cynthia Lim (l), Wendy Tsang Man Pun (u), Joyce Wu (s) and Mary Chlouveraki (s).
Cambridge struggled from the start of the first set, the strong Oxford serve targeting Cynthia to try to reduce her confidence. Bad passing didnít allow setter Joyce to set any significant balls to attack and the first Blues time-out was called with a four point deficit. Fiona and Dani set up some better Cambridge serve pressure and the pick-up play improved towards the end of the set, but not enough to stop Oxford winning.
Set two was very similar, with a poor Cambridge receive leading to poor setting and no real attack. Oxford were able to find England swing hitter Nicki Osbourne, who made few mistakes. Laura replaced Jill and Sarah replaced Uta.
The third set was a much better Blues performance with Jill serving one of her famous "runs" to give Cambridge a points margin to gain confidence from. Fiona was being set the majority of plays in the centre, and hit one strong attack to the undefended Oxford one position. Sarah also nailed a block onto a strong hit from Nicki which gave the Cambridge team the edge in the set.
The game had improved significantly by the fourth set and both sides were defending well. Oxford had the extra needed to win the match through better attack power.
MVP was Laura Diaz-Anadon
