Blues 1-1 Bristol University (25-21, 13-25)
Leeds Met, 15/02/2004
After a mad rush to get to Leeds Met for the 9-12 positional matches on Sunday morning, the first half of the team were ready and warming up whilst the second car-load made the match at a run. The first opponents of the day were Bristol, probably the stronger of the three teams that the Blues had to play. The match started in typical style for teams that had placed third in the first day pool stages and had a night out in a Leeds nightclub. Dani and Jill were producing ace serves and then serve errors in a frustrating tussle through the first set, Bristol were caught out by rotation errors a number of times and then had a long delay over substitution and then rotation confusion, fuelled by the scorers. No real attack play was apparent, Jill making the only two attack kills of the set and Dani served up an ace to take the first. The second set was a Cambridge disaster, stuck in two serve-receive rotations that were expensive in points. The pass was not bad but Mary and Joyce were struggling to get good sets to the attackers, Bristol picked up all the loose balls given to them and Cambridge had no effective cover in return. Frustration led to attack errors and the match was tied.
