Blues 3-0 Oxford Brookes University (25-10, 25-4, 25-19)
A full Cambridge turnout for this match ensured that the Blues had all their possible options open. After a decisive win already against this opponent earlier in the season, the Blues looked to consolidate on previous match performances before the Xmas break. The first Cambridge six were Bethan Shaffrey (s), Wendy Tsang Man Pun (R, capt), Fiona Danks and Ellen van Baak (m), Jill Aitken and Laura Diaz-Anadon (o) and Katy Bidart (l). The remaining squad consisted of Veronica Kunze, Lindsey Mehrer, Helen MacIntyre, Nadia von Maltzahn and Alison Todd.
From the outset it seemed like the match would go the way of the home side, with the Oxford Brookes team at times struggling to get the ball anywhere near the net. Fiona put the Cambridge team into a commanding lead with a run of three serve aces, but there was no real sustained Blues attack and 10 of the 15 Brookes points at the end of the set had been gifted by Cambridge errors.
With the changes of Nadia in the middle, Alison on the outside and Lindsey on reverse the Blues started by winning serve from Brookes with a perfect pass from Katy and a kill from Fiona. Bethan then stepped up to serve 10 points in a row, including 3 aces before being replaced by Veronica. Further good serving from Fiona and Lindsey meant that the Blues weren’t going to serve a rotation. With Helen hitting some big middle attacks (not 100% however) at the end of the set, the Brookes team were really starting to struggle.
With a slight change to Wendy setting and Veronica playing reverse for the last set, the Blues were challenged by some positional changes. However, the transition was quickly adapted to with veronica passing well and hitting some strong cross-court attacks. Nadia stepped up to serve 4 in a row (a personal record) and Alison ended the match with a back-court kill.
MVP was Fiona Danks
