Blues 3-0 Southampton University (25-22, 25-19, 27-25)
All Saints School, Sheffield, 15/03/2009
The final of the Trophy event saw the women's Blues facing Southampton, vicotrs over Reading in the other semi-final of the weekend. With a strong setter, outside and middle, the Soton team was a more difficult opponent to gauge, although there were weaknesses with the other players in the team. Cambridge started with the same six as in the semi-final, although a shaky start nearly saw the early substitution of the Cambridge captain as Southampton moved to a 6 point lead. However some solid play in the middle of the set and defense of a strong attack rotation with Rebecca containing the strong Soton middle and Petra killing anything set to the outside, allowed Cambridge to edge the first set. The second saw a comfortable win for the Blues with Soton disheartened by the ability of Cambridge team to recycle almost every Southampton attack with a back-court defense strengthened by the appearance of Saz on court. A large margin built up at the start of the third set saw some court time for Marija and Katy in the middle, although some uncharacteristic mistakes later in the set saw Soton rally with a final determined push to close the margin and level the match at 24 all. Southampton then managed to save the next two trophy points brought about by winning attacks from Saz and Rebecca, but couldnt stop the final point, fittingly an ace service from captain Alex.
MVP was Petra
