Blues 3-2 Pallovolo, Italy (19-25, 12-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-13)
Leys School Gym, 02/05/2009
Cambridge hosted a visiting team from Italy over the May bank holiday weekend. Earlier in the day the Pallovolo team had beaten the County Women's champions, CVC, in straight sets and looked strong in defence. Cambridge University played the team in the evening, with Deirdre and Flo setting, Caroline, Petra and Silvia playing outside and Maria in the middle for the Blues, the team supplemented with two CVC players to make up numbers; Anna Weingraber and Aurore Modestus. CUVC started with Deirdre, Flo, Petra, Caroline, Maria and Aurore and although the set scores were close, Pallovolo didnt have much trouble in taking the first set. The second set saw the switch of outsides with Anna and Silvia on court. Pallovolo were able to optimise against this line-up, and the Blues struggled with weaker players on one middle and outside position. However the Blues were still experimenting to find their best formation and started the third set with Aurore and Anna as middles, Caroline and Petra outside and Flo and Deidre setting. This seemed to be the most competitive combination, and Cambridge fought their way back into the match. Strong serve runs and attack from Anna and Petra made headway against the well structured Pallovolo defence to take the set. Losing their first set of the weekend seemed to play on the opponents and they seemed to start flagging at the end of the match, making more uncharacteristic errors. Into the deciding set the teams were point for point, making a very good game for the spectators. To the delight of the CUVC side, a point win and a mistake from Pallovolo gave the home team the match.
CUVC would like to thank the Pallovolo team for a great sporting event and hopes to continue the ties with the club into the 2009-10 season.
