Blues 3-1 Nottingham University (25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 25-9)
Manor Community College, 27/10/2010
These two teams can boast a number of strong hitters and during the warm up the visitors looked like they might even outgun the Blues. However, the teams looked rusty in match play, it is still early in the season and it showed, as soon as the first whistle was blown it was clear that the match result would be decided on skills other than attack.
Cambridge started with Anna Protasio setting; Barbora Doslikova opposite her; Petra Schwalie and Alice Hsieh on the left side; Sarah Greasley and Maddi Sowash blocking middle. The firs two sets followed a similar pattern, with Cambridge gradually building a lead playing steady if unspectacular volleyball. Schwalie and Doslikova led in attack while their teammates simply kept their errors to a minimum. This proved effective as Nottingham failed to do the same, giving away 9 points in attack and serve errors in set one and 11 in set two and Cambridge taking them both: 25-18 and 25-16.
Ariane Hassum and Debbie Cheng replaced Greasley and Sowash in the middle position for set 3. The Blues looked like they thought the game was going to be handed to them in the manner of the first two. Nottingham had other ideas, however, and finally managed to deploy their attack more regularly to keep the score close. The error count was even between the teams but critically Cambridge faltered on one serve rotation: going from 17-16 to 17-22 simply giving away the set.
In set 4 Sowash joined Cheng in the middle again and the intention was clear from the off, building a 9-2 lead the Blues would take the game rather than wait for the gift. Kills and aces started to flow as Cambridge crushed the now disheartened visitors 25-9.
As a first contest the result is encouraging for the Blues as Nottingham showed real potential. The return fixture will surely be much tougher if the Midlanders are better organised and show more tactical awareness.
MVP: P Schwalie
